This particular lot of coffee was purchased thru the Bonaventure Coffee Project, which is a generative and collaborative effort led by Kevin Bohlin from Saint Frank Coffee, and Benjamin Paz of Beneficio San Vicente, to restore and create “good fortune” for at-risk coffee producers in Honduras, where the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic has created a pressing and urgent need to take action.

And it's an interesting coffee for sure! This lot is 100% parainema, which is a hybrid variety grown primarily in Honduras. It is tolerant and/or resistant to most of the major coffee disease, including Roya (leaf rust) while retaining the potential of good cup quality. Parainema is a Sarchimor created by IHCAFÉ, Honduras’ national coffee association, and it crosses Timor Hybrid with Villa Sarchi. According to World Coffee Research (WCR), it has a “good” cup quality and large bean size. Parainema has become quite famous since winning the Cup of Excellence in 2015.

This coffee was produced by Álvaro Pineda Sabillón on his farm Los Cedros in the village of Las Flores, Santa Barbara, Honduras. Alvaro planted parainema on his farm in 2017 after having lost a lot of his crop due to Roya in previous years. These are young plants, which tends to lend itself to sharper, less-rounded flavors, and makes for a fairly intense cup. The flavor profile for these plants will more than likely mellow as they mature over the years.
