The Marimira Factory is located in Murang’a County, an area known for its fertile farming soil and cool climate, and is the ancestral home of the Kikuyu people. Here, coffee is a key cash crop, and the central region is a major producer for one of Kenya’s most important exports.

Marimira Factory serves over 600 smallholders, with each producer farming around 0.4 hectares each. The factory is part of the Iyego Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS) and has 11 additional mills to produce coffee in its network. Each factory is represented by a member on the management committee, which is overseen by a supervisory board.

SL34, SL28, and Ruiru 11 varieties are grown in deep red volcanic soil rich in organic matter. The Marimira Factory sits at 1,500-1,700 masl and benefits from around 1,200 to 1,500mm of rain each year.

Coffee is handpicked and sorted by floatation and density checks before cherries are pulped, fermented, and washed from water sourced from the Mukungai Stream. Sun drying is completed under careful supervision on raised beds until the parchment reaches 10-12% moisture, then transported to the dry mill where it is prepared for export.
